New VW Passat becomes a plug-in hybrid with 100 km of range

For the past five decades, the Passat has been one of the three main pillars of Volkswagen along with the Polo and Golf. The renewal of this icon is quite an event for the German firm, which has put everything on the grill to ensure that its ninth generation continues to be a reference in the D segment in full transition to electric mobility.

Although its sober aesthetics give no clues to this, the recently introduced Passat B9 is probably one of the most groundbreaking members of the saga. For the first time in the model’s history, it will not be offered in a sedan body, the only available option being the five-door Estate estate. As a result of this movement, justified by the drop in demand for sedans, the electric ID.7 will remain the sole representative of the brand in this niche of the European market.

Our protagonist, who sits on the new MQB EVO platform, grows to 4.92 meters long. This translates into a large-capacity trunk (690 liters expandable to 1,920 liters if we fold down the second row of seats). It is interesting to note that, thanks to elements such as the Air Curtains on the front, the aerodynamic coefficient goes from 0.31 to just 0.25, not bad for a vehicle of its characteristics.

Its headlights can incorporate Matrix LED IQ.LIGHT technology is attached to the corporate logo through an LED mustache. The large lower air intake takes on a greater role. At the rear, attention falls on the continuous lights, which cross the gate from side to side and give the body a greater visual width.

The Volkswagen Passat debuts platform and infotainment

The interior follows the philosophy of the exterior, with clean and simple lines, although the ambient lighting, the 10.25-inch Digital Cockpit, the projected Head-up Display and the large-format touch screen (12.9 or 15 inches, depending on trim level) add a techie touch. The gear selector knob is moved to the steering column, freeing up space on the center console.

The new generation MIB4 infotainment system offers a more intuitive user experience thanks to a completely redesigned interface with reorganized submenus. Nor can we fail to mention the ergoActive front seats, with electrical adjustment in up to 14 positions and massage, air conditioning, and heating functions.

The mechanical offer is made up of gasoline (TSI), diesel (TDI), and mild-hybrid (eTSI) options, but what we are interested in are the new hybrid plug-in hybrids. There are two, one with 204 CV and another with 272 CV. Both use the 1.5 TSI EVO2 engine with variable geometry turbo, as well as a 19.7 kWh capacity liquid-cooled battery.

This generous pack provides them with an approximate range of 100 km in electric mode. In terms of charging, they reach 11 kW in alternating current and 50 kW in direct current, so they will have fast charging (10-80% in 25 minutes), a solution rarely seen in the PHEV category that, saving distances, brings the Passat closer to a pure electric.
