Volkswagen Group electric car sales increased a 53% in the Q2 of 2023
During the second quarter of 2023, the Volkswagen Group sold 180,600 electric cars worldwide, 53% more than in the same period last year. This represented 7.7% of its total volume (which amounted to 2,331,500 units), a slight improvement from the 6% achieved in 2022.
This has been the second best quarter for the electric range of the German manufacturer. In the first half, the company shipped 321,000 electric cars, achieving a year-on-year growth rate of 48% and a share of 7.4%. Although these numbers are good, they are still far from Volkswagen’s aspirations to become one of the leaders in the sector.
With 118,900 examples delivered in the second quarter (+69%), Europe remains the main market for Volkswagen electric cars. In addition, its bank of orders in the old continent is around 200,000 vehicles. Although sales in the United States are starting to take off (+56%), their volume (14,000 units) is still very low.
Its growth is much more moderate in China (+18%), with a total of 41,000 units. If we focus on semi-annual sales, we will see that the outlook does not change much: Europe leads with 217,100 units (+69%), the United States remains at 29,800 units (+76%), and China suffers with 62,400 units ( -1,6%).
Europe is the main market for Volkswagen Group electric cars
By brands, the most popular was Volkswagen (94,800 units, +52%), followed by Audi (41,100 units, +59%), Skoda (18,900 units, +41%), SEAT/CUPRA (9,700 units, +60%), Porsche (8,839 units, -6%) and Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles (6,900 units, +1,680%). The rest (MAN, Volkswagen Truck & Bus, Scania, Navistar) remained at 400 copies (-7%).
The conglomerate’s best-selling model in the second quarter was the Volkswagen ID.4/ID.5 (59,300 units), followed by the Audi Q4 e-tron (26,700 units), Volkswagen ID.3 (26,200 units), Skoda Enyaq (18,900 units), Audi Q8 e-tron (9,800 units), CUPRA Born (9,700 units) and Porsche Taycan (8,839 units).
“With an increase in all-electric deliveries of around 50% during the first half of the year, the Volkswagen Group continues its transformation. We are Europe’s leaders in this segment and have gained market share,” explains Hildegard Wortmann, Head of Sales for the Volkswagen Group.
“Since May, we have again seen an improving trend in order intake, after some reluctance from our customers earlier in the year due to reduced subsidy programs, long lead times, and high inflation. We expect this positive trend to continue in the coming months .”
