Tesla Model Y became Europe’s best-selling car in the first half of 2023

Elon Musk has indicated that Tesla’s priority is to increase its production volume to reduce costs and gain a dominant position. A dynamic that they seem to be achieving and this is demonstrated by the figures for the first semester, which have placed the Model Y as the best-selling car in Europe.

The Model Y overcame its historic challenges of quarterly delivery peaks, achieving stable registrations thanks to the increasing capacity of the factory in Germany, combined with the efficiency of the one in China.

Thanks to this, the electric SUV has managed to surpass other much cheaper models, such as the Dacia Sandero, the Volkswagen T-Roc crossover, or the Opel Corsa, to become the best-selling car in Europe between January and June.

During this period, Model Y has managed to deliver a total of 125,144 units, which means boosting its deliveries by 211.7% compared to the same period last year. The figures could be higher because the data only covers 94% of sales in the European Union, ETFA countries, and the UK.

A Model Y is averaging 20,800 units per month, with a projection of reaching 250,000 units in Europe this year.

Behind Model Y, we find models like the Dacia Sandero. The Romanian model has managed to register 118,883 units, with a growth of 25.9%, while the Volkswagen T-Roc has been in third position, with 107,249 units, and an increase of 30.2%.

The Opel Corsa for its part, counting the combustion and electric versions, registered 102,082 units, which places it in fourth place, with an improvement of 18.1%. A very good figure if we take into account that the new version of the compact was about to be released.

His brother, the Peugeot 208, which is also close to receiving a restyling, has not done so well, whose sales have reached 101,151 units, or 5.1% less than the same period in 2022.

One of the curiosities of the list is the fall that one of the myths of the European automobile industry, the Volkswagen Golf, is experiencing. The once undisputed leader does not stop losing customers and in the first half, it has fallen to ninth place with 85,730 units and 1.3% fewer registrations than last year.

Also curious is the evolution of the Tesla Model 3, which has managed to register 38,843 units, 2.7% more than the first half of last year, but which experienced strong growth last June, the result of price cuts and which have shot up its figures by 114.6% that month.
