BMW M5 2023: First Spyshot on test drive
The upcoming BMW M5 2023 still relies on its 4.4-liter V8 Biturbo but combines it with an electric motor for the first time. The M5 Competition could be 750 hp (552 kW) in the datasheet. How does the more complex technology affect the price?
With the model change of the 5 Series 2023, the new edition of the BMW M5 is also available on the program. What awaits us then is indicated by an Spyshot, which shows itself from all sides in the first photos. We see a classic sedan that has successfully hidden its final design under thick foil. Unlike the new luxury models from Bavaria, the M5 continues to have classic headlights at kidney level. In terms of the dimensions of the kidney, we also expect a more classic, because of smaller variants than, for example, the M3 and M4.
However, that does not mean that savings are the order of the day in the engine compartment behind it. The Spyshot is “Hybrid Test Vehicle” sticker reveals where the journey is headed. The heart of the M5 is the well-known 4.4-liter V8 Biturbo, which will be supplemented by an electric motor as part of the model change. which can boost the performance – then probably in the M5 Competition – to up to 750 hp (552 kW).
The XM Concept, which made the powertrain official at the end of 2021, contributes to these specific technical data. But it is also conceivable that the M5 will be a little weaker and leave it at around 635 hp (467 kW) – as a respectful distance to the new top model. If the BMW M5 (2023) shares the battery with the XM, a purely electric range of more than 80 kilometers is conceivable.
To ensure that the BMW M5 2023 does not lose any of its dynamic driving talents due to the additional weight of the plug-in hybrid technology, M GmbH should continue to develop the chassis and the M xDrive all-wheel-drive accordingly. The M5 F90 has been proving how well the variable all-wheel drive works since 2017: At the push of a button, the V8, which currently has up to 625 hp (460 kW), sends 100 percent of the power to the rear wheels.
If maximum traction is required, the M5, which is equipped with an active M differential, digs into the asphalt with all fours in various all-wheel-drive modes. The whole thing will also have its price after 2023: Whether the next BMW M5 can keep the current price of 122,600 euros (as of March 2022) is questionable given the even more complex technology.
