Top 3 Subaru Engines

Subaru is a widely recognized brand throughout the world. Pioneers in the use of all-wheel drive and one of the few manufacturers that uses boxer engines, such as Porsche.

But its greatest success is given by the Impreza WRX and the triumphs of this legendary car in the world of rally. It is a name burned into automotive histories, like the initials STi in its most extreme version.

Today we review 3 engines that marked the history of Subaru, starting with this legendary car.

Impreza WRX STi EJ20 Boxer Engine

The STi version of the 2004 Subaru Impreza WRX was powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder boxer that produced 280 hp in the Japanese market. But of course, we are talking about 2004 … And connoisseurs of Japanese cars know that this number of horses is not accidental.

That same year, Itaru Koeda, head of JAMA (Japan Automobile Producers Association) announced the end of the famous ‘ Gentlemen’s Pact ‘ of power limitation. The US version of the 2004 WRX STi featured more power.

As of 2006, the North American country received an update that brought the boxer up to 2.5 liters, while retaining the 280 hp of the JDM version. And, of course, always coupled with an all-wheel-drive system and a six-speed gearbox.

The EJ20 engine, known to fans for the turbo version as the EJ20T (which is not an official designation) and all its variants, ended production in 2019 following an announcement from Subaru, dismissing this icon from the streets and racing.

Subaru BRZ FA20 boxer engine

Subaru BRZ FA20 boxer engine

Listed as one of the best engines of its time and in a spectacular car: the Subaru BRZ, brother of the Toyota GT86. This 4-cylinder, 2.0-liter naturally aspirated power unit was developed in collaboration with both brands.

The block is made of aluminum, with the DOHC double camshaft system and with a cylinder head signed by Toyota technology, such as the D4S direct injection system.

Later, various turbocharged evolutions arrived, such as the FA20DITFA20F, and FA20E, with Subaru’s injection system. The FA20DIT, specifically, incorporates a Garret MGT2259S turbo with a blowing pressure of up to 1 bar.

They are easily upgradeable blocks, and it is not uncommon to see many Subaru BRZ or Toyota GT86 with close to 300 hp, even in atmospheric versions converted to turbocharged with high-performance kits. Too bad we don’t see the BRZs in Europe.

EJ257 boxer engine, the EJ’s latest bet

EJ257 boxer engine

This is the last engine to incorporate the Impreza WRX STI in the United States and Europe, as well as other models such as the Subaru Outback or the Forester. We are talking about a 2.5-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder block that touches 7,000 rpm.

Its top performance is found in the 2019 version of the American WRX STi, with 346 hp and 450 Nm of maximum torque. In the European version of the car, it is limited to 280 hp and 392 Nm of torque due to environmental restrictions to comply with EU regulations.

It is currently the most advanced engine of the brand and its future in many models, with the permission of the aforementioned FA20.
