With this step Toyota confirms that Tesla already dominates the charging world
Toyota and its typical Japanese mentality have taken a fundamental step that confirms Tesla as the industry leader in charging systems. Japanese cars will have a NACS system. Recharging is a fundamental process to take into account when buying an electric car. The multiple options available on the market are there to respond to a problem that is minimized as time goes by. There is no doubt that in these terms Tesla is synonymous with guarantee and speed. Its charging network, now public, has become a reference throughout the world. Its NACS system can now be considered standard in the United States after signing an agreement with the last company that was pending to acquire it, Toyota.
The year has been very intense in terms of agreements to standardize a charging system in the United States. Unlike in Europe, where the CCS format has been imposed and is fitted to all-electric cars, including Teslas and Toyotas, in North America it has been advocated to give freedom to manufacturers so that each one can decide which solution to adopt. This has led to a small chaos that has been resolved unilaterally by the brands. Among them, they have agreed to follow a single course and nothing is better than Tesla’s format to convince the public.
Toyota will adopt the NACS format, but not in all its electric cars
Last spring, Ford made a major announcement. Starting in 2025, all its electric cars will have the NACS port installed at the factory. The agreement sealed with Tesla shook the foundations of the industry. Little by little, one after another, all brands have been jumping through hoops to adopt the Tesla port as the best and only system available. Despite the criticism and complaints issued by various associations, the Michigan movement laid the first stone in a building that today can already be considered completed. The Japanese have been the last to join this trend.
It must not have been easy for a corporation like Toyota to take the step. The Japanese have a strong mentality of conservatism. The changes are made little by little. Decisions are made after many analyses and studies and rarely in history have we seen such a change in mentality. After signing the agreement, the electric Toyota and Lexus that are manufactured from 2025 for the United States will incorporate the NACS format, but not all. The Japanese have not given up completely since, as they announced, only those vehicles that are manufactured in the Kentucky plant will be assembled. They’ve specifically referred to an all-new three-row SUV that we haven’t seen yet.
Starting that year, owners of the corporation’s electric car will be able to freely access the extensive charging network installed in North America: 12,000 points spread throughout the territory, although to connect to the supercharger network they will need a CCS to NACS adapter. that the company will be in charge of providing to its clients. For now, it is not known if they will have to pay for it or if Toyota, in a show of solidarity, will offer it for free. What is clear is that Tesla can now say that it dominates the world of charging. Its port will be the standard from 2025 and nothing and no one, not even the SAE, can say otherwise.
