This electric car will be Tesla Model Y’s toughest competitor
The BYD range is growing like foam. The Chinese manufacturer presents innovations at breakneck speed. The latest model to arrive could become the best seller of all. The irruption of Chinese brands in the main markets of the world is opening the catalog of electric cars to levels never imagined.
While the first analysts begin to report an oversaturation of supply in China, many of these models end up packing their bags to appear in other markets with an attractive quality-price ratio. The BYD Song L is called to be one of the most important models of the company globally. Because? Well, because it is the most direct rival of the Tesla Model Y.
The American car is not only the undisputed leader in the electric market, but it is also the world leader in terms of sales. Tesla has managed to turn an electric vehicle into one of the most demanded in the world. It is sensible, has good performance, long range, and its price is quite competitive. Everyone knows the recipe, but not many know how to apply it. BYD believes it has found the perfect match for the American and has just officially presented it at the Chengdu Auto Show. His data reveals that the Model Y has something to worry about.
The first thing to notice is the design. It could be said that it is an SUV, but in reality, we are dealing with a crossover. Its free distance concerning the ground is not very great, although the black moldings of the wheel arches create a contrary optical effect. Sharp lines, lines of tension, a high waist, and a rear that is quite reminiscent of a Porsche. All this is crowned by black chrome details and some attractive wheels of generous size. Under all that bodywork hides the company’s third-generation platform.
In this case, it has been modified to conform to measures that will place it in the European D segment. Outwardly, it reaches 4.84 meters long, 1.95 meters wide, and 1.56 meters high. It’s slightly larger than a Model Y, just a few inches. To these measurements, we must add a wheelbase of 2.93 meters, which suggests a generous interior space for a maximum of five occupants with a large cargo volume. At the moment, there is no concrete data in this regard. BYD has also not detailed images of the interior.
What it has specified is the performance of the Song L. There will be two models available. The access will offer a single engine with 230 kW (308 CV) of power. The top unit will boost performance to 380 kW (510 hp), power similar to that currently offered by models such as the Han and Tang.
BYD ensures that it has configured its new model to be as efficient as possible and achieve great distances, but has not yet detailed any data on the capacity of the batteries or the estimated range. Its commercial landing will take place first in China during the next quarter. The company has already announced that it will carry out an aggressive pricing policy, which encourages us to think about rates similar to those of the Model Y. It will arrive in Europe at some point, for now unknown, in the second semester.
