Mazda 3 Sedan will have a 100% electric version
Currently, Mazda has only one electric car in its range, the MX-30 crossover. Until now, the Japanese brand had been reluctant to bet on this type of vehicle, predicting that by the end of the decade they would barely account for 25% of its global sales. However, the rapid evolution of the market has made him change his mind.
Recently, the company announced the launch of an ambitious investment plan to increase its production of electric cars. In total, Mazda will allocate 10.3 billion euros to the electrification of its range, which will allow it to raise its sales target to 40% BEV by 2030.
At the beginning of the year, the Hiroshima firm confirmed that between now and 2025 it will launch three new electric models. This was precisely the year chosen for the presentation of the new Skyactiv EV Scalable Architecture, a platform developed specifically for electric cars that will be characterized by its enormous flexibility.
In parallel to the Skyactiv EV Scalable Architecture, Mazda will also have a specific platform for hybrids and plug-in hybrids ( Skyactiv Multi-Solution Scalable Architecture ); In addition, it is working on a new range of six-cylinder gasoline and diesel engines, on 24 (small models) and 48 volts (large models) mild-hybrid systems and a range extender using a rotary engine.
The next Mazda 3 could debut the Skyactiv EV Scalable Architecture platform
The Skyactiv EV Scalable Architecture may debut with the upcoming Mazda 3, as The Drive has just published a series of patents showing the company is working on a compact-sized electric saloon. In the images, it can only be seen that the new vehicle will be a four-door sedan.
The patent indicates that the battery pack will be capable enough to offer reasonable autonomy. Despite this, it will have a very slim design. Mazda plans to use both conventional lithium-ion and solid electrolyte cells, a technology likely to be provided by partner Toyota.
The documents also specify that the electric motor can be placed on the front axle, the rear axle, or both if two units are used. Therefore, Mazda will be able to have electric front, rear, or all-wheel drive. At the moment, everything indicates that the Skyactiv EV Scalable Architecture will only be used in small and medium models.
