MG4 is better than the VW ID.3 and cheaper

The  MG4 is the new electric car from  ‘Morris Garage’, a  direct rival to the Volkswagen ID.3, the Cupra Born, or the Renault Mégane E-Tech Electric. And one of its strongest points is that it is much cheaper than its competitors,  between 6,000 euros and 9,000 euros depending on the version. But we still had to know other things just as important and more. And we already know them: the media are beginning to test it and claim that it is a better car in different sections, as well as being a  cheaper option.

The  MG4  will arrive in Europe this year and will do so in two different configurations: one with a  135 kW (170 hp) and 51 kWh electric motor that reaches up to  350 km of autonomy, and the other with a  150 kW motor (204 CV), 64 kWh and 450 km of autonomy. In addition, we already know that the brand is preparing to launch, although somewhat later, other configurations that will even offer us all-wheel drive thanks to the use of two electric motors instead of one. With its  4.29 meters long it fits as an alternative to the Volkswagen ID.3 or the Renault Mégane E-Tech Electric, and can be charged at  135 kW of maximum power, for 5% to 80% battery in just 35 minutes.

The first tests are clear: the MG4 is better than the Volkswagen ID.3, as well as is cheaper

But what is a better car? At the moment the journalists who have had the opportunity to do the first tests of the MG4 are those from the media of the British motor world. And as they explain to us in Auto Express, the MG4 is cheaper than the Volkswagen ID.3, yes, but in all its versions it has remarkable standard equipment. There is no lack of touch screen for the  10.25-inch diagonal multimedia system compatible with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, or driving assistance systems such as lane keeping, adaptive cruise control, and traffic management.

In addition to highlighting its complete standard equipment, they highlight the efficiency of the MG4’s electrical system, having recorded consumption of 14.8 kWh / 100 km during its tests, which is more correct than good data. Actually, in this section, the Volkswagen ID.3 does not record bad data, but somewhat worse data was indeed expected from the MG model. And where it is also surprising, and about driving, according to Autocar, it is its excellent acoustic insulation that makes it silent, and in its smooth driving.

Richard Bremmer, car tester at Autocar, assures that it offers superior performance to that of the Volkswagen ID.3 in its equivalent version. At this point, it would be closer to the good experience provided by the Cupra Born, because it has a  50/50 weight distribution between the front and rear axles, a very low center of gravity, and better cornering stability. In this section, the Volkswagen ID.3 is a rather neutral car, designed to be practical for day-to-day use and without particularly standing out in anything.

In short, although there are also some criticisms about points in which the  MG4 Electric could improve, the truth is that the evaluations after the first tests that have been carried out are very positive. The key is precisely there: it is a  cheaper car than its rivals and it was expected that it would also offer a slightly inferior experience, but they have found that it is even a  slightly better car than the alternatives that are already available on the market. So, without a doubt, it aims to be a mass success when it lands on the European market.
