MG Marvel R will be completely transformed
Although the Marvel R is the current flagship of the MG range in the European market, the truth is that it is a model that has little or nothing to do with the rest of the offer from the manufacturer of British origin. This is because in China it is sold with the logos of Roewe, another of the SAIC group brands. For this reason, its design language is different from that of other MG models such as the MG4 Electric or the ZS EV.
The MG Marvel R falls into the D segment (midsize SUV) and is available in three finishes: Comfort, Luxury, and Performance. The first two are equipped with a set consisting of two engines (both coupled to the rear axle) capable of delivering a maximum combined power of 180 HP (132 kW) and a torque of 410 Nm. Its 70 kWh batteries give it a maximum range of 402 km WLTP.
The Performance adds the third motor on the front axle, so it enjoys all-wheel drive. In this case, it offers 288 CV (212 kW) and 665 Nm, which allows it to do 0 to 100 km/h in 4.9 seconds. Its top speed is limited to 200 km/h. The pack is identical to the rest of the versions, although in this case the range is reduced to 370 km WLTP.
All terminations include an 11 kW three-phase charger as standard. As for fast charging, it can reach a maximum of 92 kW in continuous current, going from 5 to 80% charge in 43 minutes. Nor can we lose sight of the fact that it has V2L technology, so it can power external electrical equipment.
The MG Marvel R could change its name in its next generation
Even though it is one of MG’s most attractive performance proposals, the company is already working on its replacement, which will no longer be a rebranded Roewe to embrace the aesthetic keys of the English brand. To reflect this generational change, it could release a new name.
The heir to the MG Marvel R will use SAIC’s new MSP platform, which has been designed to accommodate batteries of up to 150 kWh capacity. This architecture will serve as the basis for a total of 14 electric vehicles of the Chinese group, becoming the cornerstone of its international expansion.
Thanks to this base, the electric SUV (whose arrival on the European market is scheduled for 2024-2025) will improve its autonomy, matching the latest proposals from the competition. Its main rivals will be the Aiways U6 and the Volkswagen ID.5, although the Marvel R should be somewhat cheaper with equal power.
