Chevrolet FNR-XE Concept electric sedan for China

Without haste but without pause, General Motors continues to consolidate itself as one of the groups that are betting more strongly on electrical technology. Some of its brands (Cadillac, for example) already have a roadmap to go 100% electric, while others like Buick are reinforcing their zero-emissions offering in key markets like China.

Chevrolet, the most prominent firm in the conglomerate by sales volume, will play a fundamental role within these corporate plans thanks to highly ambitious products such as the new Equinox EV and Blazer EV, a couple of crossovers with which General Motors wants to attack two of the largest categories in the United States, the D-SUV and E-SUV segments.

The truth is that, for some time now, Chevrolet’s offer in North America has focused on profitable SUVs to the detriment of the once popular sedans, a strategy similar to that followed by Ford. Currently, the only surviving saloon in its range is the Malibu. However, this does not happen in China, where this type of bodywork is still capable of holding up.

In addition to the Malibu, Chevrolet sells Onix and Monza in the Asian country. Therefore, it is not surprising that the company has taken advantage of the GM China Tech Day 2022 event to surprise present its new electric sedan, the FNR-XE Concept. This vehicle will be part of an offensive of 15 electric models that the group will launch in China until 2025.

Production Chevrolet FNR-XE Concept Could Be Called Cruze EV Or Malibu EV

The Chevrolet FNR-XE Concept is the brand’s first electric sedan. Local media point out that it will be closely linked to the Equinox EV, which is why it will be in the D segment. Like this, it will use the Ultium Battery and Ultium Drive propulsion technologies. Everything indicates that its main rival will be the Tesla Model 3, one of the most popular electric cars in China.

A priori, it seems unlikely that it will reach the United States or Europe (remember that General Motors will reintroduce itself to the old continent in the middle of the decade with a 100% electric offer led by Cadillac, Corvette, and Hummer).

“The Chevrolet FNR-XE Concept powered by Ultium [technology], which was unveiled at Tech Day 2022, represents the brand’s next step toward a greener future. It also previews Chevrolet’s new generation of smart connected electric vehicles, custom-developed for the Chinese market.”
