VW ID.2 will be more expensive than expected

In the year 2025, the Spanish plants of the Volkswagen Group (Landaben and Martorell) will begin to manufacture the “MEB Entry Family”; that is, the company’s new electric access range, which will be made up of three utility vehicles and three B-SUVs of the CUPRA, Skoda, and Volkswagen brands. At the moment, SEAT is not expected to have its models.

It is expected that the first two models to reach the market will be the CUPRA Raval and the Volkswagen ID.2, which will be assembled in Martorell and Landaben, respectively (while the utility lines will come out of the Catalan factory lines, the Navarran facilities will take care of assembling the SUVs).

This range will be based on the MEB Small platform, a front-wheel drive architecture that will support engines of up to 234 hp (172 kW) and 290 Nm. The models that use this base will have two batteries: one of access with LFP (lithium-ferrophosphate) cells, and another more capable of about 57 kWh with NCM (nickel, cobalt, manganese) cells.

The batteries used in the «MEB Entry Family» will come from the new gigafactory to be built by the German group in Sagunto. As for the load, it is known that they will be able to recover about 163 km of autonomy in 10 minutes, so they may reach a peak of about 100 kW of power in direct current.

The Volkswagen ID.2 will cost less than 25,000 euros

As can be seen, its features will be more limited than those of the models based on the “standard” MEB platform, all to reduce costs as much as possible. The target price initially pursued by Volkswagen for the ID.2 was 20,000 euros before aid; however, inflation could eventually push this figure higher.

Thomas Schäfer, head of the Volkswagen brand, has dropped during a recent interview that the ID.2 is probably closer to 25,000 than 20,000 euros. “It is a vehicle that will cost less than 25,000 euros. If you look at the [current] price increases, you quickly go from the desirable €20,000 to €25,000.”

According to Schäfer, the current evolution of costs will make it very difficult to reach the 20,000 euros initially planned. Initially, the CUPRA Raval will be slightly more expensive, because despite being a hatchback, it will have a slightly more premium and sporty approach. However, it is expected that later (2027) Volkswagen will launch its electric utility vehicle, the ID.1, which could be closer to the 20,000 euro barrier.
