VW ID. Aero: Electric sedan officially unveiled

Volkswagen has introduced the ID. Aero concept car, a prototype very close to the production version of its new 100% electric sedan. The definitive model will arrive in China, the United States, and Europe next year, with the units intended for Western markets expected to be produced at the German plant in Emden, where the Passat and Arteon are currently assembled, which it will replace.

The sixth model of the ID family. It boasts a very worked aerodynamic coefficient (Cx of 0.23), something that will allow it to improve its efficiency, and with it its consumption. Aesthetically it is based on the ID concept cars. Vizzion and ID. Space Vizzion, from which it takes elements such as quite fine optical groups with Matrix LED «IQ. Light”.

On the sideline, the recessed door handles, the 22-inch wheels, and the silver arches in contrast to the black roof and pillars should be highlighted. The vehicle has a huge panoramic roof and boasts a smooth slope the roof (the rear window practically ends at the end of the trunk lid). The pilots are joined to the width of the tailgate and show a very striking rhomboid interior scheme.

Homologated for five passengers, this nearly 5-meter-long saloon will sit on the MEB modular platform. The unit presented is equipped with 77 kWh batteries, thanks to which it reaches a range of 620 km WLTP. With that same pack, the ID.3 settles for a maximum of 549 km WLTP, which shows the importance of good aerodynamics to maximize range.

It is expected that later the ID. Aero also receives another pack of about 100 kWh, which should allow it to exceed 700 km WLTP. Although no further technical specifications have been revealed, the vehicle is likely to be available in both rear-wheel drive and 4MOTION all-wheel-drive versions.

As for charging, the 77 kWh model should be able to reach 170 kW in direct current, going from 5 to 80% charge in just 30 minutes. Rumors indicate that the 100 kWh variant could go up to 200 kW. In the future, the range will probably be completed with a high-performance GTX version.

«With the show car ID. Aero , we are revealing a preview of the next member of the ID family. A car with an emotive and at the same time extremely aerodynamic design, a range of more than 600 kilometers, an extraordinary amount of space, and a premium interior”, explains Ralf Brandstätter, CEO of Volkswagen Passenger Cars“With our ACCELERATE strategy, we are intensively driving the electrification of our model range. After the ID.4, this model will be our next global car for Europe, China, and the United States.”
