BMW M3 Touring: First Offical Teaser

BMW has teased the first M3 Touring in an official video. We have image excerpts for you and tell you what we know so far about the sports station wagon.

BMW has unveiled part of the design of the new M3 Touring before the finished vehicle is unveiled to the public later this year – and is set to go on sale before 2023.

  • First M3 Touring ever
  • Official BMW video shows the design
  • Alternative to Audi RS4 and Mercedes C63 station wagon
  • 3.0-liter twin-turbo engine
  • 480 hp in the standard model
  • 510 hp in the Competition version
  • Optional manual gearbox likely
  • Optional switchable all-wheel drive
  • Start of sales: 2022

The BMW M3 Touring was teased in a video by the BMW M division before the finished high-performance station wagon will make its official debut later in 2022. This long-awaited alternative to the Audi RS4 Avant and Mercedes-AMG C63 T-model will be based on the existing BMW M3 sedan and is expected to be launched before 2023.

Exterior design

The BMW M3 Touring was announced back in September 2020, but these new teasers give you the best look yet at this fast station wagon. It features the same boxy rear end as the standard BMW 3 Series Touring with obvious M-tuned additions.

For example, there’s a slim roof spoiler, wider wheel arches, a massive black diffuser, and four large exhausts – all features you’ll find on the standard M3 sedan.

BMW has yet to reveal the front end of the new M3 Touring, but it’s expected to look almost identical to the standard BMW M3.

These exclusive renderings (above and below) give you a clear idea of what the finished high-performance Touring will look like once the camouflage is removed. Yes, we expect it will get the big grille as well.

You will have to wait a little longer to see the finished car in its entirety.

BMW M3 Touring Engines and gears

Under the bonnet of the new M3 Touring is the same 3.0-liter inline-six turbocharged engine as found in the M3 Sedan and M4 Coupe.

It produces 480 hp in the standard version and 510 hp in the Competition version, with these more powerful models being fitted as standard with an 8-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive.

When offered in standard trim, the M3 Touring will come standard with a six-speed manual gearbox, with an eight-speed automatic available as an option. The Competition versions are equipped with automatic transmissions as standard.

All-wheel drive and lap record

As with the M3 sedan and M4 coupe, a choice of rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive is to be expected on the new M3 Touring.

BMW M3 Touring

With the standard M3 sedan and M4 coupe, these xDrive-equipped vehicles come exclusively with an automatic transmission. Earlier images posted to Instagram by BMW’s M division show an M3 Touring with a large banner on the side that reads “Bring it on” alongside an outline of the Nurburgring circuit. This could indicate that BMW is aiming for a new station wagon lap record at the famous circuit.

The large alloy wheels on this prototype suggest it is likely the more powerful 510hp Competition variant. Equipped with a fast 8-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive, it has a good chance of taking the title from the Mercedes-AMG E63 T-model, which currently holds the station wagon record at 7.45:19.

BMW M3 Touring prices and the start of sales

The BMW M3 Touring will not be launched until later in 2022. It will probably cost a few thousand euros more than a corresponding M3, which is available in the Competition equipment from 90,500 euros.
