CUPRA Born is now available with the 77 kWh battery

The CUPRA Born is an electric compact conceived from the outset as a sporty alternative to the Volkswagen ID.3, a model with which it shares a platform, mechanical parts, and structure. This more performance-oriented character was made clear when, after its presentation, it was confirmed that it would have versions with 231 hp (170 kW) of power (its brother is currently limited to 204 hp).

At the time of its launch, CUPRA announced that the Born would be available in four versions: 150 hp (110 kW) and 45 kWh, 204 hp (150 kW) and 58 kWh, 231 hp (170 kW) and 58 kWh, and 231 HP (170 kW) and 77 kWh. However, during the first bars of its commercial life, only the 204 hp variant has been marketed.

The 150 hp model should hit the market sometime in the second quarter; however, the 231 hp versions will be available somewhat earlier, as they have just been introduced in the German CUPRA configurator (therefore, they may not belong in reaching other regions such as Spain).

While the 204 hp Born starts in Germany from 37,220 euros before aid, the 231 hp goes to 38,600 euros (58 kWh) and 44,300 euros (77 kWh) respectively. Even though the 231 hp and 58 kWh variant is equipped with 19-inch wheels as standard, its autonomy ( 420 km WLTP ) is greater than that of the 204 hp model ( 418 km WLTP ), which has 18-inch wheels.

The CUPRA Born could receive a more powerful VZ version (299 hp) with all-wheel drive in the future

The range of our protagonist improves significantly when equipped with the 77 kWh pack, as it reaches 548 km WLTP. This advantage is also preserved if we analyze the charging power since with the 58 kWh battery it is limited to 120 kW in direct current (5-80% in 35 minutes), while with the 77 kWh battery it reaches 135 kW (5 -80% in 36 minutes).

The additional 27 hp (20 kW) compared to the 204 hp version can be released for a short period, either by pressing the corresponding button on the steering wheel or by kicking down with the accelerator. This extra power is noticeable in acceleration, as the 231 hp and 58 kWh Born improve the 0 to 100 km/h of the 204 hp model in 7 tenths (6.6 seconds and 7.3 seconds respectively). The heaviest 77 kWh variant falls somewhere in the middle (7 seconds), while top speed is limited to 160 km/h in all cases.

“With the two new versions of the CUPRA Born, even more powerful, we are underlining the sportiness of our young brand. CUPRA is synonymous with passion and performance. Our customers will now be able to experience the fact that these two attributes can also be developed in connection with sustainable electromobility”, declares Bernhard Bauer, CEO of SEAT Deutschland GmbH.
