2022 Mazda MX-5 restyling for Japan
The Hiroshima firm has just presented in Japan its renewed roadster, the Mazda MX-5 2022, which does not change much, perhaps because of “if it works, don’t touch it.” The few novelties, however, are interesting, such as suspension improvements (Kinematic Posture Control) or new versions of the successful convertible.
This KPC or ‘kinematic attitude control’ acts on the inner wheel brakes in high-speed cornering, reducing body roll and increasing the stability of the model. Best of all, the engineers’ obsession with reducing weight means that this new system does not add a single kilogram.
Depending on the brand, this KPC can tailor its intervention to the situation, meaning the MX-5 behaves the same as before under normal conditions, but is more stable when driven more aggressively.
The most interesting novelty is perhaps a new special edition 990S, which we had already talked about previously, which starts from the lightest variant in the range, with a six-speed manual gearbox, and adds 16-inch RAYS forged wheels, which They save about 800 grams each, that is, 3.2 kilograms in total.
As its name suggests, this edition weighs only 990 kilograms, only 30 more than the MX-5 NA born in 1989. It also includes ventilated brake discs signed by Brembo, along with four-piston calipers painted in black. as well as new settings for the shock absorbers, springs, motor, or electric power steering.
In the passenger compartment, the 990S features piano blue and black accents for the air vents, as well as exclusive floor mats. As for the price, Mazda Japan has announced a rate of 2.89 million yen, which at the current exchange rate is around 22,400 euros.
The MX-5 also debuts in its domestic market a Terracotta Selection version for the RF variant, with a rigid roof, for a price of 3,798,300 yen, the equivalent of 29,400 euros.
Finally, the convertible will be on sale from mid-January 2022, available with the 1.5-liter 132 hp engine in the case of the conventional MX-5, and with the 2.0-liter 184 hp block for the RF. The first will also release a hood in navy blue, on sale until May.
